The channel was heavily cross-promoted on ITV1 at every opportunity. With a single genre sports channel in place ONdigital hoped the next push to its target of 2 million subscribers would be achieved. As well as the ‘spillover’ of Champions League games to the subscription channel, the key to achieving a long-term strategy rested with the exclusive rights to the Nationwide League. To fully understand the collapse of the digital broadcaster it is important to review the Football League rights deal at some length.

These technical difficulties were compounded by a growing suspicion among consumers that the service was merely a second-rate alternative to Sky. BSkyB had been frozen out of the franchise to operate the DTT platform by the Independent Television Commission (ITC) and the European Commission’s competition authority DG4 who feared Rupert Murdoch’s unhealthy level of control of multichannel television in the UK. According to Doward (2002) this cast the terrestrial broadcasters adrift from any expertise they might have been able to draw on and made them competitors with Sky rather than partners.

Something would have to give. When is a contract not a contract? In December 2001 Granada and Carlton sought to substantially cut the cost of supporting ITV Digital. They began negotiations with the platform’s main programme suppliers in an attempt to renegotiate contracts. Top of the list was the two outstanding payments of £89 million due to the Football League. News of ITV Digital’s crisis was filling the pages of the financial and media press and the League sought parent company guarantees that the rights fee would be paid should ITV Digital become insolvent.
