DTH p. 20 has btsanpo slangs dbyal. The term also appears in later literature in the rnamthar of the Fifth Dalai Lama and in a Sikkim gnas-yig. Professor D. L. Snellgrove informs me that it is found in early Bon-po works where according to Lopon Namdak it means "husband and wife" which is how it was explained in a verbal communication from the late Zurkhang Shappe who gave its modern form as gtan zhal-with the dubious etymology "constant companions".
